Moth Ball Smell Problems

Moth balls are used to kill moths when storing clothing and other items in airtight storage containers. Moth balls are not intended for use outdoors, in crawl spaces, in attics, on floors or carpets, with mattresses or furniture to keep away unwanted animals, rodents, pests, and snakes. Improper use of moth balls, like any other product, can result in problems.

The Moth Ball Odor Solution

Smelleze® Moth Ball Deodorizer Granules & Powder can be used both indoors and outdoors to remove moth ball odor resulting from improper use and for products that don't dissipate naturally and quickly.

Smelleze® will deodorize crawl spaces, carpeting, floors, furniture, and clothing of moth ball odors, complement existing ventilation systems, and create a better environment for your family.

It's No Cover-up

Smelleze® Mothball Deodorizer Granules & Powder are a natural deodorizer that can be used to eliminate moth ball smell faster instead of merely masking them with fragrances. Smelleze® is negatively charged whereas moth ball vapors ride on positively charged particles. As a result, Smelleze® draws in moth ball vapors like a strong magnet. Thereafter, it absorbs the moth ball odor like a sponge and eliminates it without smelly cover-ups. The molecular structure of Smelleze® is made up of a honeycomb framework of billions of interconnecting channels. This gives Smelleze® an enormous surface area that is larger than several football fields. The latter enables Smelleze® to absorb and eliminate moth ball vapors faster and work for months.

Eco-Friendly

Smelleze® Mothball Deodorizer Granules & Powder is a non-toxic, safe, non-hazardous, natural, non-scented and non-caustic moth ball odor removal product. It is an ideal eco-friendly solution to eliminate moth ball odor without adding pollutants to the air you breathe and improving indoor air quality. Smelleze® does not contain chemical additives and is especially beneficial for those suffering from chemical sensitivity.

Applications

Smelleze® Moth Ball Deodorizer can be effectively used to remove moth ball odors faster from carpeting, floors, cabinets, drawers, books, furniture and clothing as well as any other area of the home. In addition, it can be used outdoors to treat areas like crawl spaces that have been exposed to moth ball vapors. This will prevent the moth ball smell from entering the home and plants.

Directions

For a breath of fresh air, simply sprinkle Smelleze® Moth Ball Deodorizer on floors, carpets, furniture, cabinets, and drawers, leave for a few hours or overnight, and clean. It will remove the moth balls odor faster. It can also be safely sprinkled outdoors in crawl spaces and other areas where moth balls were placed. It will eliminate moth ball odor quicker from the soil and prevent it from entering the home and plants.

For extra effectiveness, this product may be utilized in conjunction with Smelleze® Moth Ball Deodorizer Pouches which can be used 24/7 after the granule or powder treatment to eliminate any remaining moth ball odors in the air.

DISCLAIMER: Please refer to the manufacturer's instructions for proper and safe use of their moth ball repellent products. Use of Smelleze® will NOT expand the range of approved uses of moth balls by the manufacturer and render such uses safe. Questions & Answers

Ask a Question
  • How do I get rid of mothball smell under kitchen cabinets

FIRSTLY, I would recommend sprinkling Smelleze® Natural Mothball Smell Deodorizer Granules in the drawers and surfaces to pull all the mothball odor out before it’s released into the air. If possible, place the drawers with the granules in the sun to accelerate the process.  Allow it to work overnight or for a few days. The longer the better. Then simply shake off the granules in the garden or garbage and repeat the treatment, if necessary, until most or all of the mothball odors are removed.

SECONDLY, you may use Smelleze® Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouches to capture the airborne mothball odor from the cabinets. Or we recommend using them following the granule treatment as a safeguard to eliminate any remaining mothball odor that may continue to out gas slowly from deep within the wood especially in the case of really old furniture that was exposed to mothballs for many years.

  • I inherited a bunch of wool fabric yardage and a quilt top that smell really strongly from mothballs. I was wondering if you could help with which product and how much I should get. It's probably a good 15-20 yards of fabric, a lot of it from Pendleton woolen Mills.

To get the mothball odor out of clothing and other items that are not washable, you may place them in a garbage bag or container, insert a Smelleze®Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouch and/or sprinkle  Smelleze® Natural Mothball Smell Deodorizer Powder on them and store for a few days to allow the mothball chemicals to be drawn out. Repeat, if necessary, until the odors are gone.

You may use Odoreze™ Natural Laundry Deodorizing Additive Concentrate to get the mothball chemical odor out from your washable clothes and fabric. You can simply add 1-2 teaspoons to your regular detergent in the wash machine to eliminate the mothball odor from the smelly clothes while doing your laundry. For items with really severe mothball odors, you may first soak the odor laden clothing in Odoreze™ (diluted 1-2 teaspoons/gallon) overnight and then wash them with your regular detergent plus Odoreze™ in your wash machine.

  • I’m buying a 1100 square foot house, the previous owners threw a bunch of mothballs in the crawl space underneath the house. Now the whole house reeks of this. What do you recommend to get rid of this smell?

Firstly, you can use Smelleze® Natural Mothball Smell Deodorizer Granules outdoors in your crawl space and in your yard to absorb the mothball fumes from the soil and stop it from entering your home. Smelleze® is extremely easy and safe to use. To apply, simply open the handy sprinkle/pour top on the container and scatter the granules in your crawl space paying special attention to the ‘hot odor zones’ where you had the most mothballs. It is specially formulated to attract the mothball fumes on contact, absorbing them into billions of tiny pores, and destroying the harmful smells that invade your yard and home.

Secondly, I would recommend using Smelleze® Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouches to eliminate indoor airborne mothball odor problem. For a breath of fresh air, simply place Smelleze® pouches in all areas or spaces with the bad mothball odor and smell the difference. Use one pouch for every 150 square feet of area treated and smell the difference.

  • Will this product work for a refrigerator/freezer? The mothball chemicals have permeated the interior plastic, and airing it out does not seem to help much. How do you recommend using the product for this application?

Yes, this product will definately help eliminate mothball odors from a fridge or freezer. It is designed to work at temperaatures well below freezing. To use simply place 1-2 pouches in your fridge and freezer and allow it to absorb the mothball chemical odors. If all the odors are not eliminateed, rejuvenate the pouches by heating in a microwave for 2-3 minuts and place in the fridge and freezer again. Repeat this process until all the moth ball odors are eliminated. If the mothball chemicals have penetrated deeply into the plactic, it may take a few treatment cycles to get them all out.

  • When should I use powder versus granules? I am trying to deodorize a dresser.

I would recommend using the granules in a dresser. They won't be dusty. The powder form is better to use on soft surfaces like a carpet or sofa

  • We had a bad skunk problem. The big one broke out of the trap. We then blocked all the holes and someone suggested using moth balls. We scattered them inside behind the mobile skirting on the ground. Finally after two weeks the skunk smell is getting less and less but the mothballs are still very overpowering. Will your product still work if I place it behind the mobile skirting on the ground? I was not able to pick up all the mothballs. We are desperate. We can't afford to sleep in motels. Please reply asap.Thank you.

Firstly, you can use Smelleze Natural Mothball Smell Deodorizer Granules outdoors behind the skirting, around the periphery of your home, under mobile homes, in your crawl space, in your flower beds, and in your yard to absorb the mothball fumes from the soil and stop it from entering your home. Smelleze is extremely easy and safe to use. To apply, simply open the handy sprinkle/pour top on the container and scatter the granules in your yard paying special attention to the hot odor zones where you had the most mothballs. • How much do I need to cover an 1800 sq foot area?

I would suggest buying 3-4 2 lb bottles for 1800 sq. ft.

  • What is the difference between the mothball granules vs powder deodorizer?

The powder version is basically a lot finer than the granules. It's good for areas where you want to sprinkle and vacuum up. The granules are better in areas where you want to sprinkle and sweep up or for outdoor use.

  • My dog chewed open a bag of "Snack-A-Way" which is approximately 15 lb. of crushed moth balls mixed with dirt and then spread this dirt all over my garage floor. The floor is concrete and since it is very hot here in Southeast Texas by the time I got home the fumes had successfully permeated the entire 1st floor of my home (I was struck with the odor at the front door before actually entering). While I have cleaned up the mess the stench remains 3 days later after opening all windows and doors every evening for several hours. Airing out the house has helped inside but the garage remains pungent to say the least. So, I have already purchased 2 Smelleze Moth Ball Deodorizer Pouches X-Large and 1 Smelleze Moth Ball Deodorizer Granules 2 lb. container. My currently plan of action is to sprinkle the granules on the floor of the garage and immediately on the other of the adjoining door (title flooring on the opposite side) and then place 1 pouch hanging in the kitchen (not far from garage) and one in the living room. My thought is that the gas has absorbed into the concrete flooring in the garage and is acting as a storage buffer slowly releasing more and more as the sun rises and heats the garage. I am sure it has absorbed into the walls and flooring in the house to a lesser degree. Please give me whatever guidance you might have! I have done my research on the topic and found that you guys are the experts at Moth Ball odor removal so show me what you've got!

Thank you for taking time to consult with us on your mothball odor removal problem. You have the right approach to getting the most out of Smelleze to solve your mothball problem. You might just need some more granules or pouches depending on the level of chemical fumes because 15 lbs. is a lot of mothballs!

  • Good Afternoon. In the office that I work in a coworker spread come mothballs around to deter mice. Well I removed what I could find but the smell is still very strong especially when closed up overnight. I do not want to mask the odor. I need to get rid of it. Do you have anything that would work?

Yes, we have 2 products made especially to remove odors from moth balls. You can use the SMELLEZE Mothball Deodorizer Granules or Powder on floors or carpets respectively to draw out the chemicals and then simply vacuum to clean-up. In addition, you can place a SMELLEZE Mothball Deodorizer Pouch in areas with the mothball odor to capture it from the air.

  • Can I put this in the vents, that’s where the mothball smell is coming from

Yes, you can. In fact thats an excellent use of the product because it will filter out teh mothball chemical odors

  • My son inherited a car that had boxes of mothballs stored in it to deter mice. It is extremely strong and we’ve tried shampooing, carbon, and odor absorbers. Would the noodor products work on the interior of cars?

Firstly, I would recommend sprinkling Smelleze® Natural Mothball Smell Eliminator Powder on your seats and carpeting to draw the mothball chemicals and odor out before it’s released into the air. Allow it to work for at least a few hours or a day. The longer the better. Then simply vacuum and repeat the treatment, if necessary, until the odors are removed.

Secondly, I would recommend using Smelleze® Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouches to eliminate the toxic mothball odor invading your cabin. For a breath of fresh air, simply place Smelleze® pouches in your car and smell the difference! You can set the pouches in the front, back, and trunk areas on the seat or floor. You can use 1-3 pouches depending on the severity of the mothball odor. This is an effective treatment for the chemical mothball smells that are out gassing slowly since the Smelleze® pouches work continuously 24/7 to eliminate odors which otherwise would be reabsorbed to continue this cycle.

  • Someone renting a house from me threw moth balls in the attic blow in insulation. It’s been 2 months of dealing with this smell and I can’t get it out using charcoal and cat litter. How would I go about using this product in an attic with loose insulation?

Hang Smelleze® Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouches on your rafters or simply place them around in the attic so the mothball odor can get to them without any hindrance. The more mothball odor you can eliminate in the attic, the better off you will be. Napthalene, the chemical that is typically found in mothballs, is heavier than air and will tend to move down. So if you have an attic fan, you can turn it on to help draw the odors out of the attic to aid the solution as well. If you don’t, you can use a small fan and direct it towards to roof vents to force the mothball fume in that direction. I would also recommend using Smelleze® Reusable Mothball Smell Deodorizer Pouches to eliminate airborne mothball odor in your living spaces to protect yourself. For a breath of fresh air, simply place Smelleze® pouches in all areas or spaces with the strong mothball odor and smell the difference. Use one pouch for every 150 square feet of area treated and smell the difference.
