Description
Ammonia Spill and Odor Problems
Ammonia is commonly found in many agricultural and industrial operations. It can be formed aerobically as well as anaerobically by microorganisms. It can also be generated in industrial operations as a by-product or from the volatilization of ammonium ions, NH4+. Ammonia disperses easily since it is lighter than air and does not settle in low lying areas like hydrogen sulfide and other dense odorous compounds.
This makes ammonia odors more prevalent on-site than off-site. Even low levels of ammonia can be unhealthy and hazardous to both humans and animals. It can cause damage to the respiratory tract and depress airway defense mechanisms. Furthermore, experiments have shown that when poultry, pigs, and lambs are exposed to ammonia they experience a significant feed efficiency and weight gain loss. Unfortunately, most ventilation systems only recirculate room air and remove large particulate matter such as dirt, dust, and lint. Noxious ammonia odors are left free to recirculate in the air you breathe. Over time, they could increase in concentration and result in serious air pollution problems. This could lead to complaints from employees and OSHA fines.
The Solution
AmmoSorb® Natural Ammonia Odor & Spill Absorbent Granules were specially developed to adsorb, neutralize, and encapsulate agricultural and industrial ammonia spills and odors on contact. AmmoSorb® will truly cleanse the air of noxious ammonia odors and complement existing ventilation systems. This will result in a safer and healthier environment that will be appreciated by all.
It's No Cover-up
The AmmoSorb® Natural Ammonia Odor & Spill Absorbent Granules are natural deodorizers that can be used to eliminate noxious ammonia odors instead of merely masking them with fragrances. AmmoSorb® works through absorption, adsorption and cation exchange. AmmoSorb® is negatively charged whereas ammonia rides on positively charged particles. As a result, AmmoSorb® draws in ammonia odors like a strong magnet. Thereafter, it traps, neutralizes, and encapsulates the odors without smelly cover-ups. Furthermore, it can trap ammonium ions, NH4+, in the liquid phase through a process of ion exchange thus reducing the ammonia concentration, NH3. The molecular structure of AmmoSorb® is made up of a lattice structure arranged to form a honeycomb framework of billions of interconnecting channels. This gives AmmoSorb® an enormous surface area which is larger than several football fields. The latter enables AmmoSorb® to eliminate phenomenal amounts of ammonia odors and work for months.
Environmentally Friendly
The AmmoSorb® Natural Ammonia Odor & Spill Absorbent Granules are non-toxic, safe, non-hazardous, natural, non-scented, non-flammable, recyclable, and non-caustic. It is an ideal environmentally friendly solution for cleaning up ammonia spills and eliminating ammonia odors without using pollutants and improving indoor air quality. AmmoSorb® does not contain chemical additives and is especially beneficial for those suffering from chemical sensitivity.
Applications
AmmoSorb® can be effectively used by all types of agricultural, industrial, and commercial facilities to eliminate ammonia odors and spills. Typical applications include:
Ammonia spills, animal hospitals, animal stalls, animal waste, aquariums, box cars, chemical plants, chemical storage areas, compost, food processing areas, fish hatcheries, kennels, laboratories, litter boxes, manufacturing facilities, manure, urine accidents, pet areas, photography, ponds, printing, reprography, safety cabinets, salons, shipping containers, transportation vehicles, veterinarians, waste containers, water treatment, and any other area with ammonia odor problems.
Directions
For a breath of fresh air, simply sprinkle AmmoSorb® granules generously on spill, allow to react, clean, and smell the difference. Repeat, if necessary, until odor is eliminated. AmmoSorb® granules are non-flammable and will reduce the aggressiveness of acids in their liquid form and aid in the solidification of hazardous sludge. This product can also be placed in an open top container close to ammonia odors to adsorb them. Use at least 4 pounds for every 400 square feet. This product will function most efficiently in an enclosed area with good air circulation. For extra effectiveness, use this product in conjunction with the AmmoSorb® Ammonia Removal Pouch.
Disposal
The unused AmmoSorb® Natural Ammonia Odor & Spill Absorbent Granules are non-hazardous and environmentally safe. Provided it has only been exposed to ammonia, depleted AmmoSorb® granules can be recycled and reused as a slow release nitrogen fertilizer in planting areas such as gardens, flower beds, yards, fields, potting soil, and plant beds with thorough watering. However, if AmmoSorb® has been exposed to hazardous or toxic substances it should be disposed according to all relevant local, state, and federal regulations.

There is no set limit to the number of times the AmmoSorb® Ammonia Removal Pouches can be rejuvenated and could work for years so they very cost effective. The actual number of times AmmoSorb® can be rejuvenated and its actual life span will depend on the odor concentrations, temperature, humidity and velocity of air flow it is exposed to. Replace the pouches every 3-4 months or when rejuvenation fails to work.
How to Rejuvenate AmmoSorb® Deodorizer Pouches for Maximum Effectiveness
For extra effectiveness, soak the AmmoSorb® Ammonia Removal Pouch in a 10% sodium chloride solution (5 oz. table salt/50 oz. water) for 20 hours with occasional agitation, rinse in water and air dry BEFORE placing in the sun for a day. This is a little bit more work but will enhance the effectiveness of the rejuvenated AmmoSorb® pouches when reused. Sodium chloride is commonly known as table salt.
How to Recycle AmmoSorb®
The unused AmmoSorb® ammonia control media are natural, non-hazardous and environmentally safe. You may remove this material from the pouch and apply to gardens, flower beds, yards, fields, potting soil and plant beds with thorough watering. Q & A
Questions & Answers
Ask a Question-
I had a cat who used a spare room as a litter box for a week without us knowing. Does this work on old ammonia scents? Can I sprinkle this on the carpet and vacuum it up?
Yes, you can sprinkle the powder on the carpet. You may want to leave the powder on the carpet for up to 24 hours before vacuuming. Since your order seems to be very strong, you may need to repeat a couple of times.
We would also recommend that you buy one of the Ammosorb Pouches to leave in the room to continue to absorb the odor. A link is below. Be patient the odor will get much better after using these products.

The ammonia will be in liquid form, we will hold 1.6 tonnes. We understand the potential for a liquid spill is small, however please find enclosed the MSDS for the ammonia that we are seeking to strengthen our spill kits arrangements for, which has arrived on site as part of replacement refrigeration plant. We will told 1.6 tonnes in total, used in the liquid form. We understand that the likelihood of liquid spillage is small, and that in the majority of leaks this will vent to atmosphere. However in the event of a small liquid spill, we are looking to hold appropriate products on site to deal with this. Would you recommend any other products, I understand the granules would be for the ammonia in a liquid form. How much would you recommend and how much would this cost to ship to the UK?
Thanks for the info. I would recommend the following: Keep 24 AMMOSORB Ammonia Absorbent Pouches to eliminate an ammonia gases that escapes accidently. For example, we find this happens with refrigeration plants. Keep 24 x 2 lb. bottles of AMMOSORB Ammonia Absorbent Granules for small accidental spills. The product is contained in convenient 32 oz. bottles with a sifter top so it's easy to open quickly and sprinkle the granules on a spill.

We use a 30% Aqua ammonia solution. How much AMMOSORB Eco Ammonia Eliminator Granules: 50 lb bags would we need to contain a 55 gallon drum spill?
I would approximate that you would need 2 x 50 lb. bags to absorb a 55 gallon drum ammonia spill. If you planning for an ammonia spill emergency, I would suggest verifying the exact amount by doing a test on 32 oz. a 30% Aqua ammonia solution.

We have ammonia smell in a bathroom and have tried everything: Traps wet Bore scope of sewer pipes all the way to outside tank: clean. Took out tile in shower and replaced: no effect. Took out toilet and resealed: no effect. Toilet may possibly have had a bad seal in past, but no water ever observed. What could it be and how do we solve this mystery?
I would recommend placing an AMMOSORB Reusable Ammonia Absorbent Pouch in the toilet to continuously absorb and eliminate the ammonia odors. It will get rid of the ammonia no matter the source

Are the Ammosorb granules in the hanging pouches the same as the granules you sell for sprinkling? 2. How many granules do you get in the hanging pouch? I notice that the 2.5lb pack of granules costs $14.99, and the hanging pouch costs $24.99...with no mention of the mass. Thank you for your response! I'm on a tight budget with a big air quality problem. I look forward to trying these out!
The main difference between the AMMOSORB pouches and the granules are that the pouches are designed to be reusable for years whereas the granules are mainly for a single use. The pouches weigh about 2 lb. but they may be more cost effective for you since they are reusable for years.
